AWS re:Invent 2019: Onica.create(AI.Magic) Interactive Lab

We’re excited to bring Onica.create(AI.Magic), a hands-on, interactive lab to AWS re:Invent 2019! The Onica.create(AI.Magic) lab is designed to showcase how IoT, Serverless & AI/ML technologies can be combined to build unique user experiences.

The goal of the lab is to provide attendees with exposure to cloud native solutions architecture, displaying the simplicity of Amazon SageMaker training and Serverless IoT backend in AWS. Participants will work with both an IoT device as well as machine learning models to enable gesture based motion control in a video game. You can come experience Onica.create(AI.Magic) at booth 508 in the Quad at ARIA.

How Onica.Create(AI.Magic) Works

Step 1: Train Your Wand

In order to perform gestures, the lab consists of a wand that has an accelerometer on it and that wand will be connected to an IoT board. The accelerometer captures X, Y and Z data points telling you the force of gravity on the wand. Once the data points have been captured, they are then associated with the gestures of up, down, left and right.

Gesture data is then sent from the IoT board onto Amazon S3 where a model is trained using Amazon SageMaker that will be able to recognize and tell us which gesture a user performs in the future. The model built from the recorded data is sent down to an AWS IoT Greengrass device, running right beside the IoT device, that enables inference at the edge.

Step 2: Play the AI.Magic Game

Now for the best part! We have developed a special video game for this lab. The model from Step 1 will be utilized to navigate a Wizard through a maze in the video game. For example, if you trained a circle motion gesture to be recognized as a command to turn right or move right, the Wizard will move right. A gesture will be mapped to each direction to guide the movement of the Wizard and special actions that help avoid obstacles. The end goal is to be able to complete the lab in 30 minutes, and if you do that, you can win your very own IoT DevKit!
